What is the purpose of referendums?
Under the Referendum and Plebiscites Act 2025, the Government may choose to hold a referendum to pass legislation on major topics such as citizenship or electoral reforms.
Only Article I and II of the Act are under any legal effect until the conclusion of the referendum, granted that a Yes vote has been reached.
Should a simple majority of the Yes vote be reached, the rest of the Act will immediately come into effect upon the announcement of results. If a No vote has been reached, the Act will be repealed.
