What is the purpose of the referendum
Under the Referendum and Plebiscites Act 2025, the Government may choose to hold a referendum to pass legislation on major topics such as citizenship, which is the topic for this referendum.
Only Article I and II of the Citizenship and Eligibilities Act 2025 are under any legal effect until the conclusion of the referendum, granted that a Yes vote has been reached.
Should a simple majority of the Yes vote be reached, the Act will immediately come into effect upon the announcement of results. If a No vote has been reached, the Act will immediately be repealed.
The Citizenship and Eligibilities Act 2025 is described as "An Act in which repeals the Citizenship Act 2023 and redefines eligibility and revocation criteria and entitlements of citizenship". Key features of the Citizenship and Eligibilities Act are the redefinition of eligibility criteria for application and revocation of citizenship, entitlements to those with citizenship, and the revocation of the Citizenship Act 2023, which would be the first Act to be repealed via both law and referendum.
